A Brilliant Morning at The Leeds Library!

We recently hosted a Schoolreaders volunteers’ coffee morning at The Leeds Library.
Fifteen volunteers came along to chat, share stories, swap ideas, and reflect on their Schoolreaders volunteering experiences. It was a great opportunity for people to meet others doing the same role and feel part of a wider community.
We were able to introduce three pairs of volunteers who were all supporting children in the same schools - just on different days - and had never met before. It was a brilliant reminder of the collective difference our volunteers are making across local schools.

We also enjoyed a fascinating guided tour of The Leeds Library, the oldest surviving subscription library in the UK. Founded in 1768 and tucked away above the busy streets of Leeds city centre, the library is full of character, with stunning reading rooms, endless bookshelves, and an incredible literary history.
During the tour, volunteers had the chance to see, and even hold, some amazing rare books from the library’s collection, including a first edition of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and an early edition of The Hobbit, complete with illustrations by J. R. R. Tolkien. It was definitely a “wow” moment!
A huge thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the morning such a success, and to The Leeds Library for such a warm welcome and brilliant tour.
