On 8th February Schoolreaders held its largest ever author story time during National Storytelling Week, with author Ian Brown sharing his best-selling Albert the Tortoise and
Hugg ‘n’ Bugg stories with over 70 classrooms throughout England.
During the online event, Ian talked of his passion for reading and how that led to a career as a writer and producer working on shows like The Simpsons, Top Gear, Strictly Come Dancing and with dozens of household names. He also spoke about perseverance and resilience – key topics in many primary schools - as it took him 40 years to be published. The award-winning Albert books are all inspired by his family pet tortoise – also called Albert.
‘It was a real thrill to help Schoolreaders launch their year of events and initiatives,’ said Ian.
‘I visit dozens of schools and libraries each year trying to help encourage youngsters to read. This was my biggest event. The work Schoolreaders and their volunteers do is so important. It is all about opportunity.’
Graffeg’s, publisher of Ian Brown’s books, Managing Director Peter Gill said, ‘We were pleased to join Ian on this special event with Schoolreaders. It is great to see such an event be such a success.’
Sally Wrampling, CEO of Schoolreaders said, ‘We would like to say a huge thank you to Ian and Graffeg for helping us to kick off the National Year of Reading in style. It was wonderful to see so many classrooms engaged with Ian’s Albert and Hugg ‘n’ Bugg stories. Research shows that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success, so the earlier we can inspire children to find the joy in reading, the greater their life opportunities become. Events like this are a wonderful way to do just that, as Schoolreaders aims to provide over 1.5 million reading sessions for children in 2026.’
As a further thank you, to support this fantastic event, Graffeg is kindly offering our schools an exclusive discount on Ian Brown titles: buy any two books and get one free, plus free shipping. Find out more here.
A huge thank you once again to Ian for such a heartwarming and engaging storytelling session, and to Graffeg for their support.
